Panel Installation & Upgrade

Panel Installation & Upgrade

Do I need to upgrade my panel?

Electrical panels do require maintenance from time. When taken care of they should last anywhere from 25 to 40 years before needing to be replaced. If you have concerns about your panel, don't hesitate to contact us and have us check it out. Some signs you should find to be cause for concern include, flickering lights, buzzing near wires, a burning smell when an outlet is in use, scorch marks on electrical outlets, small sparks when plugging things in, and small shocks when touching electrical appliances. If there has been water damage, faulty wiring, or overheating of wires, you will want a journeyman electrician to inspect your panel and determine if it needs to be replaced or upgraded. Increased electrical output

Another reason you may want to upgrade or replace your electrical panel is if you are planning to install a major new appliance. Your panel may not have the capacity to handle the increased output. If you add something like a built-in air conditioner or a hot tub to your home without first upgrading your electrical system, your existing panel may not be able to provide enough power, which could cause breakers to trip. Older homes did not need to provide us much power since we did not use nearly as many electronics and devices. The need for electrical power in homes has definitely increased in recent years. If you notice you are using quite a few power cords to give you more outlets, that is a good indicator that your home was not built with enough power for your current needs. Your electrical panel may need to be upgraded or replaced to meet this demand and supply your power needs safely.

200 Amp Service

Many years ago, homes were normally constructed with 100 or 150 amp service. This is because fewer electrically powered machines were used. The standard in home construction these days is 200 amp service. A complete panel upgrade will get you the added electrical power that your older home needs to meet your current electrical needs. If you are building an addition such as a new garage or a workshop requiring power, you may need even higher amp service. Workshops with a lot of power tools may require 400 amp service. When planning out your home improvement projects, talk to your Leduc electrician and they will do a load calculation to determine exactly the amount of power your home will need to provide for you. Safety

Ensuring your electrical panel is safely contained is very important. There should not be any exposed wires. If your panel does not have an appropriate cover or lid, we can provide one or build one as needed. Your panel should have safe access but not be exposed. Knowing that your electrical system is up-to-date, safe, and capable of meeting your household's needs gives you and your family a sense of security and peace of mind. Give us a call if you have any concerns about your electrical panel, and we will be able to address your concerns promptly and safely, always providing the best electrical service to our clients.
